The work of making bidis is spread all over India and a large
number of women and girls are involved in it. Bidi making is the largest
industry in Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad district(INDIA). Which employs about 2.5 lakh workers. Those
who live at the mercy of the contractor and get less than minimum wage. Even
among the poor families, 75 percent of the families
fall under the government poverty line and whose main source of income is to
make bidi. About 90 percent
of the women are engaged in this employment who take home the raw material
given by the contractor and works per rate. The process of making beedis is
simple and requires very little skill, so some children and disabled people
also make beedis. All raw materials are produced in India. Rural families see
this as supplemental income.
HOW BEEDIS ARE MADE?
Beedi has to
undergo three processes. Washing and drying the leaves of tendu and cutting it
to the appropriate size. Then spreading the required amount of tobacco on the
same leaves and giving them cone shape. Tighten both ends by threading them
together with straws and Tie the thin end.After that they are kept at a fixed
temperature in the furnace for 24 hours. When removed from the furnace, they
are wrapped in light paper and labeled and then sent to retail units.
Wages - The wages for making one thousand
bidis is Rs. 24.90. This includes dearness allowance of Rs 8.50. The wages of
different stages of making beedi per 1000 beedi are as follows: - Cutting of
tendu leaf by size (Rs. 2.50) - Closing its mouth (Rs. 2.50) - Tying thread on beedi
(Rs. 1.30). ) - Waste of leaves and tobacco (Rs. 2.50) -
How can I
apply for a BIDI making and selling license in India?
If you want
to start a Bidi making business than you need to apply for the Tobacoo license.
Wholesalers and distributors of the Tobacoo and Bidi makes are required to
obtain license from states where they plan to work.
As a dealer
of cigarettes or tobacco products you must:
Prominently
display the license at each licensed location in a manner visible to the
public.
Keep
complete and legible purchase invoices for cigarettes and tobacco products for
four (4) years.
Keep these
invoices at the location indicated on your license for the first year after
purchase.
Allow Board
staff or law enforcement agencies to review your invoices upon request.
The law also
adds record keeping requirements and other provisions related to your purchase
or manufacturing of cigarettes and tobacco products.
